Legend Says

Acerola is native to Paraguay, Brazil, Southern Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Haiti. Also known as Guarani cherry, Barbados cherry and West Indian cherry it is not related to the cherry (Genus Prunus). In the 17th century, navigators consumed acerola to prevent scurvy. Malnourished mariners believed acerola could boost immune function and support healthy hair, skin and nails. Many nutraceuticals are made with acerola. Acerola is also a source of vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, folate, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, and selenium. In lore it is associated with fire, energy, power, passion, harmony and protection.

A treasure in trove of exotic taste

Some say it tastes like starfruit, others say like pomegranate, or a hint of sweet tart cantaloupe. It does not taste like cherry even though it is referred to as the Barbados Cherry. This powdered ingredient will add pep and tartness to your breakfast and dessert recipes. Acerola pairs well with banana, melons and fruit bowls. Add an elegant differentiator in spreadable like hummus or cheese spreads. Sprinkle on pumpkin soup or butternut squash soup, salads and roasted vegetables. It makes a delicious sauce or glaze on pork. Make your own acerola vinaigrette to pair with salmon or a swordfish steak. This is the secret weapon your bbq sauce needs.

Acerola in beverages

Acerola powder works well in all kinds of social beverages to add tartness, in iced teas, lemonades. As a substitute for creamers in caffeine free raspberry acerola latte, or as the protagonist in vitamin C acerola and ginger shots, homemade fizzy beverages like club soda or mineral water. In mixology is will add a sexy tone to tonics and mixed drinks. Smoothies, cocktails, mocktails. Out of limes? Try a bit of acerola in your rum. Spritz.

An exotic fruit for bulk production

From increasing energy levels to balancing hormones, Acerola powder contains high amounts of vitamin C. Its increasing popularity has made supplement manufacturers keen on adding it to their existing catalogs. Use this up and coming superfood powder to brew drinks or mix it into smoothies or food. This fruit is exotic and rare. The easy storage of powder in large quantities allows for keeping it for longer periods without the obstacles of storing large quantities of the fresh fruit, which tends to go bad within a few weeks.
